Donald Olson, age 87, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Tuesday, July 3rd, at Essentia Health Living Center in Fosston. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 27th, at Bethel Assembly Church in Fosston with Pastor Seth Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Rosehill Cemetery, Fosston. Family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Military honors will be provided by the National Guard Honors Team. Arrangements are with the Carlin Funeral Home of Fosston and messages of condolence may be sent at www.carlinfuneral.com. Memorials may be designated to the Sand Hill Lake Bible Camp.Donald James Olson was born on May 7, 1931 in Fosston, Minnesota. He was raised on the farm by Edward and Gunda Olson. He grew up in Fosston and attended Fosston High School. He entered the United States Army in 1953 and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. He received his honorable discharge in 1955 and returned home to Fosston. He was united in marriage to Mavis Carol Irene Berg on July 5, 1958 at Trinity Lutheran Church north of McIntosh, Minnesota. Don and Mavis lived and raised their family in Fosston. Don worked at the Aspen Egg Hatchery in Fosston from 1955 until 1960 and then in Fertile from 1960 until 1962. He worked for Detroiter/Homark for 33 years, hauled sugar beets for eight years, and hauled grain for many years for Tory Ostenaa and the Olson Brothers. In his retirement years, he worked for the City of Fosston driving bus and mowing. Don was also active in his church. He was a leader in Royal Rangers for 20 years and an usher/greeter for 30 years at Bethel Assembly. He also enjoyed his years in Area Men's Fellowship and assisted in building many of the dorm buildings at Sand Hill Lake Bible Camp. As part of the community,Don participated in the Fosston Sportsman's Club and enjoyed supporting and following Fosston High School sports. He also like deer hunting and fishing. Donny was a man of many talents and someone who put everyone else first; his family, friends and anyone in need. He was affectionately known as "daycare grandpa" by the kids at Angie's daycare. He will be missed by so many...everyone loved "Ole".Don passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at Essentia Health Living Center at the age of 87 years.Survivors include four children, Steve (Sue Ellen) of Apple Valley, MN, Angie Olson of Fosston, Amy (Eric) Hovland of Mora, MN, and Pete (fiancé, Tonya) of Fosston; grandchildren, Ben (Kimmy) Olson of Edina, MN, Dan (Lara) Olson of Burnsville, MN, Tim (Amber) Olson of West St. Paul, MN, Katie Olson of Apple Valley, MN, Liz (Ben) Horn of Isanti, MN, Rachel Hovland of Stillwater, MN, and Bekkah (Axel) Zellman of Foley, MN, Lilly and Luke; great grandchildren, Henrik, Alex, Ezra, Edee, Jocey, Thomas, and Amelia.Also surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law, Mavis Berg of McIntosh, MN, Gladys Nornes of Cooperstown, ND, June Parsley of South Milwaukee, WI, Donavin (Kenny) Berg of Cocoa, FL, Ray Berg of Cudahy, WI, and Ruthie (Donn) Reichert of Clearbrook, MN. Other relatives also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mavis on June 11, 2008; his parents; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
