Mae Bakken, age 66, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Saturday, December 31st, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 15th, at the Carlin Funeral Home in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Kingo Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston, at a later date. Family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the funeral home. Mae Annette Hanson was born on August 19, 1950 in Fosston, Minnesota to parents Gwendel and Myrtle (Svedberg) Hanson. She grew up in Fosston and graduated from Fosston High School in 1968. She worked for Corky Leikness at Leikness Electric in Fosston, and Hartz grocery store. She was also employed at You Ask For It and the Good News Book Store, both in Fosston. Mae also attended Northland College in Thief River Falls. Mae suffered a heart attack in 1996 and at that time it was determined that she was in need of a heart transplant. Three and a half years later, she was blessed to have the transplant at Mayo. After her recovery time, she returned to Fosston where she lived at her home. After some health complications, she lived at Cornerstone in Fosston, for a short time at Summerfield in Fertile, and was currently a resident at Essentia First Care Living Center in Fosston. Mae was known for her love of crafts and the arts. She loved painting, drawing, sculpture, beading, crocheting, knitting, hardanger, and painting stained glass. She was a very talented artist. Survivors include her daughter, Jennifer Bakken-Brees and her husband, Kerry, of Fertile, MN; grandchildren, Christopher, Jazz, and Keith; one brother, Wendel (Jan) Hanson of Fosston; nieces, Lisa (Patrick) Sekely of Fosston and their children, Lauren and Jack, and Kristen (Brad) Norland of Fosston and their children, Kora, Cullen, and Aaron; and nephew, Michael (Jillian) Hanson of Alexandria, VA and their children, Ethan, Arleigh, and Valen; aunt, Doris Svedburg of Waxhaw, NC. Cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; one aunt and two uncles. Honorary Pallbearers: Jim and Valerie Sears, Rosalie and Glen Larsen, Arlene and Kenneth Wold, and Iyelet and Daryl Ohren.
