Marlen Strand, age 81, of Fosston, MN and Lengby, MN, passed away on Thursday, June 18th, at Essentia First Care Living Center in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24th, at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston and messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.com.Marlen Donald Strand was born on September 6, 1933 in Ulen, Minnesota to parents John and Pauline Hollevoet Strand. He was baptized at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston. He grew up in Beaulieu Township, Mahnomen County, and attended the Dwayne country school south of Fosston. He worked for a time at the potato plants in Fosston and in Grand Forks, but most of his life was spent farming on the home farm 14 miles south of Fosston. Marlen was also a veteran of the United States Army, serving from November of 1956 until his honorable discharge in November of 1958. He served most of his time overseas in Germany. While stationed in Germany he traveled to visit cousins in Norway. He purchased a nice camera in Germany and took many pictures and slides so he could share his adventures with his family back home. Currently he was living at Essentia First Care Living Center in Fosston. Marlen liked fishing and especially enjoyed spearing in the winter. He also liked deer and duck hunting. At a young age he taught himself how to play the harmonica and entertained his family and friends with his playing. He will be dearly missed by his family.Survivors include his two sisters, Erma (Richard) Siedschlag of Moorhead, MN, and Verna Ekeberg of Fosston; sister-in-law, Margie Strand of Fosston; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Helen Brisset, Opal Jensen, Palmer Strand, Gordon Strand, Bernice Strand, John Strand; brothers and sisters-in-law; nephews, Brent Strand and Daniel Siedschlag; great nephew, Jason Nepsund; and great nieces, Karyna Gilbertson and Hope Sween.
