Obituary for Oliver Trujillo

Oliver Trujillo, age 86, of Lengby, MN, passed away on Tuesday, July 10th at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 16th, at Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel in Crookston with Father Scott Graves presiding. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery Hansville, rural Fosston. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 15th, the Carlin Funeral Home in Fosston. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to St. Labre Indian School, the Universal Living Rosary Association, Society St. Pius School, and St. Joseph’s Indian School. Oliver Valentine Trujillo was born on July 14, 1931 in Loma, Colorado to parents Valentine and Jennifer Trujillo. He grew up in California and Colorado, graduating from Carbondale High School in 1949.

Oliver served in law enforcement in California and then in Colorado. He had completed one year of teacher’s college at Colorado State when the Korean War began. Oliver enlisted in the Army, where he served in Korea. After receiving his honorable discharge, he returned home and completed his teacher preparation, graduating with his B.A. in Spanish and Science.
Oliver was working as a town sheriff in in Carbondale, Colorado when he met the love of his life, Emily Farris. Oliver and Emily were married on June 11, 1960 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. They made their home in Colorado for eight years before moving to Minnesota in 1969. Oliver began teaching high school Spanish and Chemistry at Fosston High School where he taught for 23 years. He taught school for a total of 32 years.

After retiring in 1993, he enjoyed working on the family farm, spending time with family, and a good game of cards. Oliver was a fervent Catholic with a strong devotion to Our Lady. He only missed Mass when illness prevented it, attending the traditional Latin Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel in Crookston.

Oliver was very generous to help those in need and loved to provide for his family. He was diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer in June of 2018. He passed away peacefully in his family’s loving arms on July 10, 2018.

Survivors include Emily, his wife of 58 years and their 13 children, Kathi, Vicki (Mike), Bruce (Doreen), Patti (Larry), Chuck (Tina), Matt, Melani, Andrea, Joni (Lance), Michelle, Mike (Ashley), Rachel (Eli), and Mary (Paul); his sister, Gloria Nordby and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, Burt Nordby.
