Dean Franklin Vikan, Colonel, USAF (Ret.), age 87, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2026. Dean Vikan, age 87, of Fosston, MN, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 17th, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 14th, at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Peter Lurvey officiating. Interment with full military honors will be held at a later date in the United States Air Force Academy Cemetery, Colorado Springs, CO. He was born on May 14, 1938, in Fosston, Minnesota, where he was raised and graduated from Fosston High School in 1956.
Dean went on to attend the United States Air Force Academy, graduating in 1960. Following his commissioning, he entered pilot training and began a distinguished career as a fighter pilot. He initially flew the F-105 and served his country with honor during the Vietnam War, completing 68 combat missions. Throughout his Air Force career, Dean always identified himself as an F-105, or “Thud,” pilot—the nickname given to the aircraft because of the sound it made with uncontrolled impact with the ground, a bit of graveyard humor.
In 1968, Dean graduated from the United States Air Force Test Pilot School, a significant milestone that reflected both his exceptional skill and dedication. He later returned to the school as an instructor pilot, helping train and mentor the next generation of Air Force aviators.
Among his many assignments, Dean served as Director of Operations at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, where he flew the A-10. His final active duty role was as Director of Logistics for the F-16 program at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. After a distinguished military career spanning 25 years, he retired in 1985 with the rank of Colonel. Following his retirement from the Air Force, Dean worked for Lockheed Martin on the F-22 program, retiring in 1996 and returning to Fosston, Minnesota. Once settled in Fosston, Dean became very active in civic and community activities.
Dean was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Phyllis; his parents, Franklin and Wilma Vikan; and his sister, Gail Adams. He is survived by his sisters, Linda Kline and Bonnie Thoreen and her husband, John; his brother, Gary Vikan and his wife, Elana; his daughter, Wende and her husband, Jeff; his son, Todd and his wife, Ramona; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dean will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to service, his leadership, and his passion for aviation. His legacy lives on in the many pilots he trained and the family and friends who knew and loved him.
He is deeply missed and will be forever remembered.
