Donald “Don” Schacher, age 91, of Lengby, MN, passed away on Tuesday, April 14th, at McIntosh Senior Living. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 25th, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lengby with the Rev. Gene Lilienthal officiating. Interment will be in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery at a later date. Family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service on Saturday (25th) at the church. Military honors will be provided by the Spring Lake V.F.W. Post No. 2759 of Lengby and the Army National Guard Honors Team. Arrangements are with Carlin Family Funeral Service of Fosston and messages of condolence may be shared at www.carlinfuneral.com. Memorials are preferred to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Donald James Schacher was born on May 18, 1934, in Sletten Township, rural Fosston, Minnesota to parents Andrew and Frances (Abele) Schacher. In 1939, the family moved to Heier Township and Don attended the Steinbrenner country school through the eighth grade. When he was 16 years old, he began working for Land O’ Lakes in Fosston.
He entered the United States Army and served in Germany during the Korean War time frame. During his time in the Army, Don was a tank fueling specialist, tank field repairman and got his start learning about diesel engines. He received his honorable discharge and returned home to Fosston. He was hired back at Land O’ Lakes where he drove truck and later transitioned to diesel mechanic.
Donald was united in marriage to Nancy Rae Harthun on September 14, 1963, at First English Lutheran Church in Fosston. To this union, three children were born, Miles, Tracy and Tina. The family lived in Fosston until 1979 when they moved Lengby. Don retired from Land O’ Lakes in 1994 at the time of the plant closing.
Keeping busy in his retirement, Don drove truck for Lenes Sand and Gravel for several years, built trailers, and did various jobs around the area. Nancy passed away on March 17, 2011. After Nancy passed, he continued to live at home. In 2019, he moved to Erskine, living with his granddaughter, Jasmin. He recently entered McIntosh Senior Living.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church (He was confirmed there on December 1, 1996) and was long-time member of the Island Lake Drifters Snowmobile Club. He loved building and fixing, woodworking, leather working, camping, hunting, fishing and outdoor activities. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include his three children, Miles (JoAnn) Schacher of Hawley, MN, Tracy (Steve) Grove of Cloquet, MN, and Tina Schacher of Lengby; seven grandchildren, Jasmin (Daniel) Tank, Wyatt Grove, Jessica (Zack) Lene, Tyler Schacher, Madison (Levi) Larson, Morgan Grove, and Gavin Schacher; four great grandchildren, Freya, Carlota, Emerson, and Ira; two sisters, Lois Torbett of Springfield, MO, and Florence Nesvold of Fosston. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy; his parents; one sister, Mary Griffin; and brother, William Schacher.
