Dorothy Jean Poehls Brown was born on February 4, 1933, in Sabin, Minnesota to parents John and Stella (Reitan) Poehls. She grew up near Sabin, attended rural school near Sabin, and Barnesville High School, graduating in 1950 as the Salutatorian of her class. She then attended Concordia College in Moorhead, graduating with a teaching degree and a minor in mathematics.  She taught 1 year in a one room country school.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Glen Laverne Brown on June 17, 1954, at St James United Church of Christ in Barnesville. They lived on 2 farms or homes west of Barnesville until they moved to Fosston in 1958, where they worked and raised their four sons, Doug, David, Donald, and Duane. Dorothy worked for RC Koehler at Koehler Floral and then Kay’s Variety in Fosston for over 40 years until her retirement.

Dorothy was also an active community member for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fosston, the Athenian Club, Hospital Auxiliary, Hospice, and was an election judge which she thoroughly enjoyed doing.

She also enjoyed reading, quilt-making, embroidery, flower gardening, crocheting, sewing, cards, Scrabble, and going to the casino and having their delicious wild rice soup. For many years she had big gardens and canned or froze all from them. She loved sports. She watched as much as she could of the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings plus other teams.

Survivors include three sons, Doug (Shirley) of McComb, MS, Donald (Rayette) of Jamestown, ND, and Duane (Connie) of Fargo, ND; 13 grandchildren, Evelyn, Asa, Eric, Katie, Danny, Josh, Jacob, Matt, Chris, Tessa, Terra, Melinda, and Stephanie; many great grandchildren; one sister, Betty (Kenneth) Lasneski of Alexandria, MN; one brother, George (Priscilla) Poehls of Fargo, ND; and sister-in-law, Edith Kaiser of Bemidji, MN.
