Gary Hjelmstad, age 78, of Island Lake, MN, and Otsego, MN, passed away on Monday, August 10th, at Essentia Health Hospital in Fargo, ND. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 18th, at St. Agnes Cemetery, near Island Lake, south of Lengby, with Pastor Ed Martin officiating. Gary was born on April 2, 1948, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, to Wally and Maxine Hjelmstad. He graduated from East Grand Forks Senior High and received his Bachelor's degree from Moorhead State University. He grew up with a strong foundation of faith, family, and service, values that guided him throughout his life.

Gary shared 56 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Linda (Toftness) Hjelmstad. Together they built a loving family and created a legacy that will continue through generations. He is survived by his wife, Linda; his daughters, Kristin Post (Dana) and Kari Anthony; his son, Kyle Hjelmstad; his grandchildren, Kelsie, Drew, Kylie (Alex), Kaitlin, Kaleb, Katriel and Josh; and his great-grandchildren, Bryson and Kaia. He is also survived by his brother, Ron Hjelmstad; his sisters, Karen Hjelmstad and Barb Rood; along with many extended family members and cherished friends. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Wally and Maxine Hjelmstad; his parents-in-law, Julian and Irene Toftness; and his brother-in-law, Terry Toftness.

Following his graduation from college, Gary dedicated his professional life to serving others as a nursing home administrator. Throughout his career, he was known for his compassion, leadership, and commitment to providing quality care and support to residents and their families. Gary lived a life marked by kindness, humor, dedication, and faith. He touched the lives of all who knew him through his generous spirit, warm smile, and unwavering love for those around him. He found great joy at his lake cabin on Island Lake, Lengby, Minnesota, where countless memories were made with family, friends and neighbors. There, he developed close friendships within the local Amish community and frequently provided transportation for community members. Nothing brought Gary greater happiness than spending time with his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed cheering from the sidelines and proudly watching his grandchildren participate in sports and other activities. His encouragement and support are gifts that his family will always treasure.

Above all, Gary was passionate about his relationship with Jesus Christ and his devotion to his family. His faith was the cornerstone of his life and shone through in the way he loved, served, and cared for others.

Though our hearts are broken, we take comfort in the memories we shared and the love Gary gave so freely. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in our hearts. "Well done, good and faithful servant." Matthew 25:23.
