Gerald Edgar Borud was born August 29th, 1941 in Fosston, to parents George and Esther Borud. He graduated from Fosston High School and earned degrees from Bemidji State University, the University of North Dakota and NDSU. He married Marlyss Rindahl in June 1962, and they had six children. They also opened their home to three foreign exchange students and 17 foster children. After Marlyss passed away in 2011, Gerald married Colleen Hangslaben in June 2012. They were blessed to enjoy 12 years together serving God through their church, families, friends and communities until his passing on September 29th, 2025, at the age of 84.
Gerald’s varied work history included teaching, school administration, entrepreneurship, ranching and truck driving. He was an avid reader, a skilled card player, and enjoyed gardening. Music was very important to him. Singing as a family, both at home and in public, was a priority in his life. He also enjoyed any opportunity to play the trumpet. He participated in and directed many instrumental and vocal groups in the communities in which he lived. He especially enjoyed praising God through his music.
Gerald served God and the people around him through participation and leadership roles in church, service organizations and politics. He dedicated countless hours to Bible studies in his home, prayer breakfast at church and outreach missions such as jail ministry, truckers chapels and Gideons International.
He is survived by his wife, Colleen Borud; four children: Dawn Helene, Daniel Borud, Sonja Sutton and Solveig (Brett) Overturf; eight grandchildren and four Great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Marlyss, two sons George Einar and Peter Andrew, two sisters and two brothers.
Funeral Service: October 4th, 2025. Mt. Carmel Free Lutheran Church at 2:00pm. Interment: Our Savior’s Cemetery immediately following the service
