Helen Ness

Helen Ness, age 88, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Sunday (February 10th) at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday (February 15th) at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Thursday (February 14th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston and sympathy messages may be sent at www.carlinhoialmen.com.Helen Irene Paulsen was born on November 25, 1919 in Fargo, ND to parents Sigvart and Margaret (Kleven) Paulsen. Her mother died when she was 5 years old and she was raised by grandparents, and an aunt and uncle on a farm near Erskine, MN. Helen graduated from Erskine High School and was confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine. She attended one year at Concordia College in Moorhead.She was united in marriage to Orrin H. "Bud" Ness on July 9, 1942 in an outdoor ceremony at her aunt's home near McIntosh, MN. While Bud was in the service in India from 1942 to 1945 Helen lived in McIntosh. When Bud returned from the service they moved to Fosston, MN in June 1946. Bud passed away on March 5, 2003 and Helen moved to Prior Lake, MN. In June 2007, she returned to Fosston and moved into Prairie Pines Assisted Living and then to First Care Nursing Home.Helen was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston for over 60 years. She was active in Ladies Aid, Circle, Altar Guild and making quilts and banners. She was also a member of Athenian Club. Helen enjoyed playing Scrabble, Whist and other games. She was passionate about cooking and had a special interest in her Norwegian heritage baking. Helen was an artist with talents in Hardanger, watercolors and ceramics.On Sunday, February 10, 2008 Helen Ness was welcomed by her heavenly Father when she passed away at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston at the age of 88 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.Survivors include three daughters, Margaret (Larry) Gjerstad of Mott, ND, Lois (Cliff) Olson of Granite Bay, CA and Shirlee (Bill Lansing) Ness of Eagan, MN; grandchildren, Greg Gjerstad, Garey (Teresa) Gjerstad, Gwen (Mark) Miller, Krischelle (Scott) Tennessen and Chad (Merry Joy) Olson; and great grandchildren, Tyler, Lauren and Jessie Gjerstad, Noah, Ethan and Cole Miller and Jack, and Julia Olson.She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband of 62 years, Bud Ness.
