Helga Aspen

Helga Aspen, age 84, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Monday (October 15th) at Essentia Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (October 20th) at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Friday (October 19th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston and messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.com.Helga Sieglinde Schrott was born on March 22, 1928 in Vienna, Austria to parents Otto and Johanna (Fischer) Schrott. She grew up and attended school in Austria. She met her future husband, Orville, when he was stationed there as part of the United States Army peacekeeping force following the end of World War II. After his discharge, Orville returned to the States and arranged for Helga to join him.Helga and Orville were united in marriage on February 9, 1947 at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston. After their marriage, they lived on the north edge of Fosston, raised their five children, and owned and operated Oak Grove Hatchery. After the hatchery closed in 1965, Helga began work as a nurse's aide at the Fosston Hospital, continuing for over 35 years until her retirement. Helga faithfully took care of Orville during his last years until his passing on July 26, 2006. After Orville passed away, Helga was a dedicated volunteer at the nursing home in Fosston.She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston. She enjoyed playing the piano and accordion and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.She is survived by her three sons, Orland (Linda) of Fosston, Frank (Marilyn) of St. Paul, MN, and Gary (Kathy) of Blaine, MN; two daughters, Renee (Roger) Wittenberg of St. Cloud, MN, and Rebecca (Ronald) Ostrom of Lathrop, CA; 10 grandchildren, Jeffrey, Amy, Melissa, Brian, Jonathan, Laura, Matthew, Michael, Kim, and Kyle; 12 great grandchildren; as well as many other relatives.She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two brothers, Gerhart and Helmut.Pallbearers: Helga's grandchildren
