Leslie Yergens, age 92, of Mentor, MN, passed away on Monday (August 6th) at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls, MN. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (August 11th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Erskine with the Rev. Timothy Lundeen officiating. Interment will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, McIntosh. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral chapel. Military rites will be provided by the McIntosh V.F.W. Post #6891. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Erskine. Condolences may be sent at www.carlinhoialmen.com.Leslie Vernon Yergens was born December 27, 1914, to parents Anthony and Jennie (Brekke) Yergens at McIntosh, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in McIntosh and attended country school in King township. He later attended Agricultural school at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He married Myra Nyhus on July 19, 1941. Shortly after, he entered the army and World War II, landing on Normandy Beach on D-Day and continuing on to the Battle of the Bulge, was wounded and received the Purple Heart.Honorably discharged, he returned to Fosston and worked at various jobs, then decided to attend Auto Body Mechanics School at Fargo, North Dakota and worked at that trade for many years and later ran his own grain truck.He and Myra were the fill-in baby-sitters for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as "Gramps". He enjoyed music, especially "Bluegrass", featuring the fiddle.He passed away August 6, 2007 at the age of 92 years, 7 months, and 10 days. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.He is survived by his wife of 66 years Myra, daughters Sharon (Willard) Benson of Mentor, Charlotte (Howard) Hopke of McIntosh, 5 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. One sister, Mildred Gluth of Wilsonville, Oregon; one sister-in-law, Mildred (Mrs. Stewart) Yergens of Duluth, MN; and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by parents, an infant daughter, brothers Francis, Stewart, Clifford, Harry, and one sister Alice Bradley.Pallbearers will be Leslie's grandchildren-Joshua Benson, Justin Benson, Jeremy Benson, Brandon Benson, Tanner West, and Shane Fredericks.
