Mary Griffin, age 87, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Monday, May 27th, at Essentia Health Hospital in Fosston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 1st, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fosston with Father JohnMelkies Suvakeen presiding. Interment will be in Rosehill Cemetery, Fosston. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Mary Jean Schacher was born on April 6, 1932 in Sletten Township, rural Fosston, Minnesota to parents Andrew and Frances (Abele) Schacher. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Fosston. She grew up in Heier Township and attended the Steinbrenner country school. After her schooling, she did baby sitting and waitressing in Fosston before moving to Minneapolis where she continued with the same type of work for several years. She was married to Robert Smith on October 22, 1955 and they adopted a daughter, Melody, and they lived in Minneapolis. In 1972, she married Al Wallen and she and Al moved to Texas where they lived until 1982 when they returned to Fosston. While in Fosston, they lived in, and were the caretakers of, the Town Square Apartments in Fosston for several years. Al passed away in 1989.In 1993, Mary married Dennis Griffin. After their marriage, they lived in the Summerfield Place Apartments in Fosston. Dennis passed away in 2000. Mary volunteered for Senior Meals and also at First Care Nursing Home for over 15 years. She liked painting, playing cards, and attending family gatherings. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fosston.Survivors include her daughter, Melody Parades of Minneapolis; step daughter, Myrlie Smith; four grandchildren; two brothers, William (Jean) Schacher of Minneapolis and Donald Schacher of Lengby, MN; two sisters, Lois Torbett of Springfield, MO and Florence (Ernest) Nesvold of Fosston. Nieces and nephews also survive.She was preceded in death by her husbands, Al and Dennis; sister-in-law, Nancy Schacher; and brother-in-law, John Torbett.
