June 10, 1945 — February 17, 2018

Mary Lou Schmidt, age 72, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Saturday, February 17th, at Essentia Health Hospital in Fargo, ND. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 23rd, at Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Alan Arneson officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Thursday, February 22nd, and for one hour prior to the service on Friday. All visitation will be held at Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Fosston. Arrangements are with the Carlin Funeral Home of Fosston and messages of condolence may be sent at www.carlinfuneral.com. Mary Lou Cantwell was born on June 10, 1945 in Oklee, Minnesota to parents Milo and Lily Christianson Cantwell. She was married to Jack Rindahl on October 17, 1964. After marrying, they moved to Minneapolis for several years before returning home to Oklee. They lived and farmed near Oklee for many years. In addition to assisting with the farmwork, Mary Lou worked as an outreach worker for Inter-County Community Council for over 20 years. Mary Lou was united in marriage to Steve Schmidt on June 12, 1987 and together they made their home near Bemidji, Minnesota. Mary Lou worked in outreach for Bi-CAP in Bemidji as well as Pete's Place and Orton's convenience stores until they moved to Fosston 5 years ago. After a brief period of retirement she decided retirement wasn't for her and she found a great fit at Digi-Key part time.  Her Christian faith was always a forefront in her life. She was very active in every church she belonged to and was currently a member of Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Fosston. Over the years Mary Lou enjoyed sewing, quilting, scrapbooking and baking. More recently, she filled her time by attending birthday parties and activities for the grandkids and great-grandkids. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. She will be dearly missed. Survivors include her husband, Steve, of Fosston; seven children, Debbie (Gerald) Larson of Thief River Falls, MN, Rhonda (Kim) Vettleson of Oklee, MN, Lisa (Dan) Staudinger of St. Cloud, MN, Michele (Brandon) Cottrell of St. Cloud, MN, Richard Rindahl of Minneapolis, MN, Lindsi (Ben) Shanahan of Bemidji, MN, and Tara Schmidt of Minneapolis, MN; 16 grandchildren, Derrick, Brenden, Dana, Zak, Ana, Josh, Cassandra, Alexis, Paige, Jordan, Cade, Abigail, Claire, Conner, Kieran, and Grace; and 10 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Bob Solien of Gonvick, MN; and sister-in-law, Donna Cantwell of Red Lake Falls, MN. Also surviving is her mother-in-law, Arlene Schmidt of Fosston, MN; and Steve's siblings and their spouses, David (Vicki) Schmidt of Minneapolis, MN, Mark (Mary) Schmidt of Crookston, MN, Nancy (Kenny) Hartel of Wilton, MN, Sarah (Mark) Gunning of Clearbrook, MN, and Mary (Danny) Lee of Roseau, MN. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Benjamin; brother, Duane Cantwell; sister, Barbara Solien; infant sister, Linda Lou; and her father-in-law, Pete Schmidt.Honorary Pallbearers: Grandchildren and Great-GrandchildrenActive Pallbearers: Derrick Larson, Brenden Larson, Zak Larson, Josh Vettleson, Cade Staudinger, and Jordan Cottrell.
