Mildred Olmstead, age 90, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Wednesday, December 20th at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 27th at 11:00 AM at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. John Dalen officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 26th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston, and for one hour before the funeral at the church. Interment will be at Kingo Lutheran Cemetery in Fosston, and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements.Mildred Gertrude Louise Olson was born March 25, 1916 in Popple Township, rural Bagley, Minnesota to parents Gustaf and Gena (Rudrud) Olson. As an infant and young child, she lived on her parents homestead in Roseau County, and at age 4 moved with her parents to a farm in Queen Township, near Fosston, MN. She was baptized and confirmed at Cross Lake Lutheran Church, rural Fosston. She attended the Lade School near her home and graduated from Fosston High School. Mildred attended St. Cloud Teachers college and received her masters degree from Bemidji State College and taught school at various rural schools in Polk County as well at Santiago and Coon Rapids, MN. On August 17, 1943 she married Albert "Bob" Olmstead at her parent's farm near Fosston. Mildred and Bob lived in Anoka, MN until January, 1946 when they purchased Mildred's parents farm in Queen Township, near Fosston. They remained on the farm until moving into Fosston in 1976. Mildred taught third grade at the Fosston Elementary School from 1960 until her retirement in 1981.In 1995 she moved to Brainerd and in 1997 moved to Anoka. In 2002 she moved back to Fosston and resided at First Care Nursing home until her death at the age of 90.Mildred enjoyed sewing, gardening and traveling, having taken many trips with family members after her retirement, which included a trip to the home where her grandfather lived as a child in Norway. She took a lot of pride and personal satisfaction in teaching and helping the hundreds of children that filled her classrooms over the years and enjoyed seeing her former students long after they had graduated from school.Mildred was a long time member of Kingo Lutheran Church of Fosston and was active in church activities and teaching bible school. She had also been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.She is survived by her four children, Richard "Dick" (Ellen) of Brainerd, Dale (Connie) of Coon Rapids, and Carol Yochum (Larry) of Colorado Springs, CO and Peter (VirJean) of Crookston, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Earl (Laura) Coleman of Roseville, MN, as well as numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, her parents and a sister, Mrs. Norman (Ruby) Peterson of Erskine.Pallbearers were Eric Olmstead, Adam Olmstead, Paul Coleman, Bob Olson, Maurice Grover and Brian Burks. Interment in Kingo Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston.
