Upon his discharge, he enrolled in and graduated from Dunwoody Institute, Minneapolis, MN. In 1952, he married the love of his life, his dear bride, Marian (Colsen) Haugen. They resided in and around Fosston, MN for their entire marriage of over 61 years. After a period of time working as an auto mechanic he began a thirty year career as the manager of Schraeders Auto Parts Store in Fosston. Norval and Marian were delighted to welcome five children to their young family. In 1953, Susan was born quickly followed by Bruce (1954), Daniel (1958), Amy (1960), and last, but not least, Brian (1963). Norval enjoyed fishing, golfing, auction sales, Twins baseball, watching birds, and listening to both country and gospel music, and he loved keeping and maintaining a beautiful yard. He was a faithful member of Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Fosston where he served as a trustee and in various other capacities. Norval and Marian continued to be blessed as the years went by. They were given the wonderful opportunity of enjoying eight grandchildren and later on, twelve great grandchildren.
