Olin Flateland

Olin Flateland, age 75, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Thursday, November 20th, at Essentia First Care Living Center in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 29th, at Sand Valley Lutheran Church in Trail, MN with Dawn Hanson officiating. Interment will be in Sand Valley Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Saturday morning (29th) at the church in Trail. Olin Kirk Flateland was born on March 2, 1950 at Fosston Hospital, the son of Knute and Etta (Anderson) Flateland. Olin was baptized at Sand Valley Church. He resided at home until the age of 3 and then entered Redwing State Hospital until moving to Cambridge State Hospital in December 1958. Olin resided there until May of 1960 when he moved to Brainerd State Hospital. In June 1969 Olin was transferred to Fergus Falls State Hospital and lived there until his admission to the Fosston Group Home on December 28, 1979. He began working at the East Polk County DAC in Fosston in January of 1980.

Olin enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He spent every summer at home on the farm, driving tractor, baling hay, and stacking firewood. He was always busy doing something around the farm. If it was outdoors he was doing it. He was also home for every holiday and special event. Olin enjoyed his years of work in the Fosston community, especially in the pop can recycling. Olin enjoyed playing jokes and pranks on others. Olins favorite pass time was riding bike.

Olin is survived by his sister Annette (Gerald) Nelson of Trail, MN, his brother Bradlee (Margaret) Flateland of Foley MN; sister-in-law, Sylvia Flateland of Trail; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister: Arley Flateland in 1996, Howard Flateland in 2009, Allen Flateland in 2015 and infant brother Keith Flateland in 1936. His sister Kathleen Larson in 2024.
