Olive Bergh

Olive Bergh, age 95, of rural Trail, MN, passed away on Wednesday (January 8th) at First Care Living Center in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday (January 14th) at Nazareth Lutheran Church, rural Trail, MN with the Rev. Joseph Abrahamson officiating. Interment will be in Bethany Lutheran Cemetery, rural Trail. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Monday (January 13th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston and messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.com.Olive Theresa Haugan was born on March 30, 1918 in Hickory Township, rural Trail, Minnesota to parents Halvor and Ingeborg Ostby Haugan. She grew up north of Trail and attended rural school in that area through the eighth grade. In those days, work took priority over school, so she took cleaning jobs in the area to earn extra money. She ended up working for the Bergh family where she met her future husband, Harry Edward Bergh.When Olive turned 18, she and Harry (The Bergh's youngest son) began dating. They were married November 19, 1938. Shortly after their marriage they took out a loan and purchased the Bergh Family Farm from Harry's dad and began farming. Olive continued to work on the farm raising cows, chickens and sheep until their daughter graduated from high school. At that time she started taking jobs outside the home, cooking in many of the area cafes, sewing for OMC in Oklee, and making wedding cakes for people. She finally landed a job as head cook at Mac Manor Nursing Home where she worked for 17 years. Bothe Harry and Olive retired in their early 70's and rented out the farm. Olive continued to live on the family farm until her health began to fail, at which time she moved in with her daughter in between hospital stays.She was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church of rural Trail.Olive passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at First Care Living Center in Fosston at the age of 95 years, nine months and nine days.Survivors include her daughter, Darlene (Jerry) Berg of Fosston; two grandchildren, Tory Blasus of Northfield, MN, and Shannon Blasus of Fort Collins, CO; two great granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Brittany Blasus of Rochester, MN; and great grandson, Christian Blasus of Fort Collins; two sisters, Hazel (Cliff) Nyleen of Sutherlin, OR, and Muriel Nelson of Mesa, AZ; and several nieces and nephews.In 1980, Jerry and Darlene took in a foster child as part of their family, Kieron "Duffy" Brown. Survivors in the Brown family are Duffy's five children, Amber, Dustin, Trevor, Cheyenne, and Ethan; and his grandson, Carter Jeremiah Rhode.She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters and their husbands, Harriet and Raymond Emerson and Esther and Sydney Strande; brother in law, George Nelson; and Kieron "Duffy" Brown.
