Ordean Keith Sundrud was born on January 26, 1943, in Fosston, Minnesota to parents Orvin and Sylvia (Thorson) Sundrud. He grew up north of Fosston and attended the Oakland country school in Hill River Township and the Fosston school. After completing his schooling, he worked for a local mink farmer, eventually starting on his own.
Ordean was united in marriage to Carol Halvorson on June 17, 1961, in Lengby, Minnesota. Together they lived and raised their family on the home farm north of Fosston. In addition to farming and raising mink, Ordean started Black Gold Development (wild rice) in 1967 until 1979, and Mr. Carrot in Trail and Fosston (carrot processing) in 1986 until 1991. He was a well-known fur buyer for over 42 years and had a true love for farming. Ordean farmed from when he was just a kid up until this spring at 82 years old.
Ordean and Carol liked to travel in retirement. They went south to Rockport, Texas for 22 years and thought of themselves as “Winter Texans”.
He was a life-long active member of Vernes Lutheran Church. Through the years, he was on various church boards, the Hill River Township Board, and the Rosebud Co-op Board.
In addition to traveling with Carol, Ordean loved fishing, hunting, and playing cards. He enjoyed his annual fishing trips to Canada with his friends. He truly could make friends with anyone he met and was one that would always be there to lend a helping hand. He also documented his family’s whole lives by taking pictures – making hundreds of photos albums throughout the years. For Ordean, his best times were spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
