Shirley Elva Lambrechts was born in rural Twin Brooks, South Dakota, August 2, 1924 to parents Cline and Lilah (Purington) Lambrechts, the fourth of five children. Shirley attended a country school one-and-a-half miles from her parents farm near Twin Brooks, completing primary, first and second grades in her first year of attendance and finished 8th grade before she was 12. Of the four girls and one boy in the family, Shirley was the one who always worked outdoors with her dad and brother Leon, doing all farm chores, earning her the nickname Jon with her family. She often told of cutting and stacking Russian thistles, which seemed to be the only thing that grew in eastern South Dakota, part of the Dust Bowl during the Dirty 30s. She met and married Lawrence Tollefson in South Dakota in 1941, and moved to his hometown of Fosston in 1945 where she has since resided. Shirley and Lawrence had three children: Judy, Wayne and Joyce Tollefson. Divorced in 1954, Shirley married Arnold Anderson in 1955 and was blessed with three more children: Arnold Jr., Sheryl, and Scott Anderson. Shirley worked for several years at the Fosston Potato Plant before taking a cooking position at the Fosston High School in the fall of 1976. She loved cooking for students, chatting and joking with them as they passed through the lunch line, for 23 years and finally retired at age 75. She was a member and worked at the Embassy in Fosston whenever food was prepared and served for various events. Shirley was a music lover and enjoyed spending time at the Embassy when musicians thrilled all who attended with old-time tunes once a month. Shirley was a terrific dancer and taught her children and grandchildren how to waltz, polka or schottische whether they wanted to dance or not. She was a member of Kingo Lutheran Church most of her adult life and enjoyed the fellowship of weekly Bible studies with other seniors as long as her health allowed it. Shirley is survived by three daughters: Judy Newton, McIntosh; Joyce Anderson, Crookston; Sheryl (Ron Fairbanks) Anderson, rural Lengby; one son, Scott Anderson, rural Lengby; Six grandchildren: James Newton, Denver, CO; Lorri Wenneson, Minneapolis, MN; ChrisAnn Shelton, Pensacola, FL; Paul (Tara) Anderson, Warroad, MN; Adam Bingham, Fosston; Brian Bingham, Fargo, ND; 11 great-grandchildren: Andrea, Thomas, Michael, Nikki, Jody, Billy, Megan, Taya, Sharon, Mario, Winter; 3 great-great-grandchildren: Brennan, Dylan, Allivia, and many nieces and nephews.
