Life Story

Harold Smeby, age 75, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Thursday, October 20th, at Villa St. Vincent in Crookston, MN. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 27th, at the United Methodist Church in Fosston with the Rev. Justin Dietel officiating. Interment will be in Elim Cemetery, rural Winger, MN. Family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Military honors will be provided by the Air Force Honors Team and arrangements are with Carlin Family Funeral Service of Fosston. Harold Theodore Smeby was born in Fargo, ND to Ted Smeby and Helen Haugen on May 6, 1947. He graduated from Mahnomen Highschool in 1965. He then enlisted in the Air Force. He served during the Vietnam War in Thailand and Vietnam. After he served for 6 years, 7 months, and 22 days, he started driving trucks for farmers. In 1992 he bought his own semi-truck and started driving for Karriers Inc. He drove for Karriers until he retired in 2017. He met his wife Phyllis Loland in 1995. They joined in holy matrimony in September of 1996.

He truly loved his job of driving a semi-truck. He loved fishing and always looked forward to the family vacation on the lake. He loved his four granddaughters more than anything. He loved being around people and exchanging good jokes. He was very proud of being honored by the Twins when he raised the flag at a home game on June 12, 2019. He liked football and baseball but really loved car racing. He liked going to the local car races.

Harold is survived by his wife Phyllis of 26 years, his three stepsons, Jason Loland of Fosston, mn, Josh Loland (Lisa Loland) of Grand Forks, MN, and Reverend Justin Dietel (Michaela Dietel) of Bemidji, MN. He is also survived by his four granddaughters Peyton, Jacqueline, Elizabeth, and Harper Dietel. He is also survived by his sisters-in-laws LuAnn (Rodney Beiswenger) of Fisher, MN, Mary Jo (Aaron Paquette) of Faribault, MN, and Carol Smeby of Fosston, MN, and his brother-in-law Jay Dietel of Erskine, MN. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Ruth Dietel. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Sanford and Truman, his father-in-law Orville, his nephew Nathan, and many others.
