Life Story

Marjorie Berger, age 92, of Erskine, MN, passed away on Saturday, March 19thm at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. A private prayer service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Carlin Family Funeral Service of Erskine and messages of condolence may be shared at www.carlinfuneral.com.

Marjorie (Margie) was born on May 20, 1929, to Sophie Swanson and Bill Norman of Thief River Falls, MN.   At six weeks Inga and John Nelson of Erskine, MN adopted Marjorie.  She was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine, MN.  Margie spent her first 17 years growing up on the Nelson farm.

Margie was united in marriage to Miles Vernon Berger on October 18, 1946, and resided in Erskine, MN.  Miles and Margie raised four children and lived in five states; returning to Erskine in 1956.  Margie then decided to go to work cleaning cabins and waitressing for Moran’s Steak House.  In 1964, Margie started working for Garden Valley Telephone Company as a Toll Clerk.  Miles passed away in 1972. Margie spent the next 15 years alone but certainly not lonely spending her time with friends, family and traveling.  In 1981, she bought back the house that she and Miles had once built on Ward Avenue in Erskine.  In 1991, she retired from Garden Valley after 26 years.  In 1988, Margie was introduced to Dick Miner of Union Lake.  Margie and Dick fell in love and enjoyed traveling the world on many cruises and enjoyed spending 25 winters in Maui, Hawaii.

Margie was a talented seamstress and made many clothes for herself, children and grandchildren over the years.  She also made beautiful quilts including one for each grandchild.   She was on a bowling team, The Five Pennies, for many years, active in Lady's Aide and Homemakers Club, and in later years participated with other women of Grace Lutheran Church in making quilts for those in need.  Margie loved to dance and had a great love for animals, including her favorite cat, Felix.  In recent years she enjoyed time with her close friends she referred to as “the gang”.

Marjorie is survived by her sons, Jim Berger (Sandy), Larry Berger (Linda) and daughter, Linda Fleury (Bruce); 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Miles, her parents, and daughter, Jan.

Blessed be her memory.
